Music

A symphonic style somewhere between Beethoven, Robert Schumann, and Brahms.

Biography

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1984, Matthew Scott Johnson grew up in a relatively non-musical family. His father is an artist and his mother was born completely deaf. Matt took an early interest in music and creating his own melodies, and he participated in every musical activity he could get his hands on. His first symphonic work was premiered by the Sweet Briar College Orchestra in 2000, Matt was 15. He premiered many piano works in the following years.

In 2003 he attended Lynchburg College, a small liberal arts school with a growing music program. During his residence there he composed a Christmas Cantata that has received multiple performances and his first symphony (Symphony No. 1 in C Major). He graduated with a degree in Instrumental Education. Now he attends the Grad School at UNC-Greensboro, pursuing a Masters of Music in Composition.
