Life

[in Dutch] Francis Poulenc ontving zijn muzikale opleiding bij Charles Koechlin (1921-1924). Toen maakte hij tevens kennis met Arnold Schönberg. Hij was aangesloten bij de groep Nouveaux Jeunes (later de Groupe des Six: Jean Cocteau, Honegger, Auric en Milhaud), waar hij de invloed van Jean Cocteau onderging. Aanvankelijk lichtvoetig in stijl, bracht de dood van een goede vriend in 1935 een nieuwe diepte in zijn werk. In dezelfde tijd ontstond van de langdurige samenwerking met de bariton Pierre Bernac, die hij vanaf 1935 tot 1949 regelmatig begeleidde. In deze periode ontstond het merendeel van Poulencs liedoeuvre (w.o. een aantal cycli), waarin hij zich ontpopte als een waardig opvolger van Fauré, Duparc en Debussy. Poulenc heeft daarmee een belangrijke en idiomatische bijdrage geleverd aan het Franse kunstlied. Poulenc had een voorliefde voor stijlcitaten, alsmede voor een ongegeneerd gebruik van populaire motieven uit de jazz en de amusementsmuziek. Deze beide elementen zijn met wisselend succes toegepast in zijn vnl. instrumentale werken uit de jaren twintig en het begin der jaren dertig.
