Biography
Abt studied theology and music in Leipzig, where he was a friend of Mendelssohn and Schumann. From his post as Kapellmeister at Bernburg, he went to Zürich to embark on an immensely successful career as a choral conductor. From 1855 until his retirement in 1882, he was Kapellmeister at the Court Theatre in Brunswick. During this time he conducted in many cities in Europe, and toured the USA (1872).
He composed more than 3,000 works, mostly songs and partsongs in a popular and simple style, often close to folksong. His work also included two operas and some piano pieces.
