Messiaen
In the district Görlitz-Moys, now belonging to Polish Zgorzelec, was the Nazi camp “Stalag VIII A”, in which Olivier Messiaen was kept in prison (1940–42); here he composed the Quatuor pour la fin du temps and performed it with three fellow prisoners on 15.I.1941 before an audience of 400 people, who made do with the cold, the only three-string cello and the untuned piano — Today all traces of that camp have been wiped away.
