One of the greatest and most influential composers of the 20th century, Karlheinz Stockhausen, died on 5 December. The announcement, made by the Publishing Company Stockhausen, was confirmed on by his ex-wife Mary Bauermeister.
As a composer he was a pioneer in using live electronics during performances. His opera cycle "Licht" ("Light") is considered as being the longest stage work since Wagner's "Ring der Nibelungen".
As a teacher Stockhausen has influenced many composers of his own and later generations.
Together with Pierre Boulez and Luigi Nono together formed the Triple Star of New Music in the 1950s.
