The Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts, which has been awarded since 2001, will this year been presented to composer and flutist Robert Aitken.
The prize, worth CAN$50,000, is handed out by the Canada Council for the Arts. It recognizes lifetime achievement by Canadian artists who have spent the majority of their careers working in theatre, dance or music in the country.
The jury of the awards explains the award as follows: "As a flutist, composer, interpreter and teacher, he is a distinguished innovator and continues to exert a strong influence on upcoming generations."
