The Gold Medal of the Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is awarded to French composer Henri Dutilleux, now 92 years old. Last Wednesday, at the presentation ceremony at London's Wigmore Hall, Graham Sheffield, Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic said that Dutilleux had “consistently produced work at the very highest level throughout his long composing career, holding steadfastly to his compositional principles and resisting the merely fashionable to create a distinctive and powerful language that is never simplistic.” The first Gold Medal, one of Britain's highest musical prizes, was awarded in 1870 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Beethoven.
