An oil painting, which was originally owned by the Austrian family of Johann Lorenz Hagenauer, is now identified to represent Wolgang Amadeus Mozart. Professor Cliff Eisen of King’s College London’s department of music has authenticated the work. Mozart is shown in profile, and wears a red jacket that he once described in detail in one of his letters.
It is believed that the work was painted by Joseph Hickel around 1783. Hickel was a painter to the Imperial Court of Austria.
The portrait was bought in 2005 by an American collector, who was unaware of its significance.
