Editorial Review:

Product Description:
IMPROVISATIONS3 is a live recording, made at the Tagus Power Station in June 1993, which attests to an attitude that has characterized the music performed in concert by the Miso Ensemble, from its foundation in 1985 until today, an attitude through which total improvisation, when practised by the Miso Ensemble, as happens in the concert recorded on this disc, presupposes a capacity for organizing time and musical discourse in an intuitive but structured fashion that defi es all conventions, but which nevertheless displays a genuinely personal language, internal and necessary. For Paula Azguime, as well as for me, both of us composers and improvisers, both terms, composition and improvisation, are merely two methodologies (implying identical degrees of rigour, responsibility and freedom) which allow us to reach different musical results which are nevertheless specific to each of these methodologies, and which are employed by the Miso Ensemble depending on the musical objectives in question. The practice and result of improvised music are fundamentally different from the practice and result of composed music, but both are music in the fullest sense of the term. This recording is the affirmation of one of these methodologies, and on other CDs by the Miso Ensemble it is possible to hear the other side of the coin. Here, then is the recorded documentation of one of the concerts of the Miso Ensemble consisting entirely of improvisation, which also benefited from the participation and mastery of a fellow musician with whom we have worked for a long time, the bassoonist Robert Glassburner, with his own particular characteristics, side by side with me and with Paula Azguime, also with her own characteristics, and similarly high level, an example of two musicians who employ technique in the service of music, in a creative and sensitive whole, which emphasizes timbre, timbre understood as a total unity of musical parameters and which opens the way for any possibility. This CD contains fi ve of six improvisations given in this concert in the Tagus Power Station in Lisbon, recorded directly in stereo, with no subsequent editing.
