Romanticism was characterised by idealising the expression of the emotions of the composer. The notion of the suffering artist stems form this period. The romantic era starts around 1800, and goes on some way into the twentieth century. In the first half of the twentieth century the ever more complex romantic music competed with the new forms and sound of the then modernistic composers.
Composers who also play the violin and as such performed their own or other composer's compositions.
The Strauss family — father Johann Sr. (I), and his sons Johann Jr. (II), Josef and Eduard — is famous for its numerous compositions of the dance music that was popular in Vienna in the 19th century. They all wrote many waltzes, polkas, marches and much more dance music. Johann Strauss son was the most famous of them all; he also wrote several well-known operettas.
