The classical era in music, the transition from baroque to romantic music, lasted from around 1750 till 1800. In this period the symphony as a seperate work of art was developed. Another characteristic is the so-called sonata form, a way to structure music. The term classical for this music refers to the ancient Roman and Greek cultures, that were idealised in that era.

Composers that were born in Austria, or gained the Austrian nationality.

Composers who also play the viola and as such performed their own or other composer's compositions.

The three great classical composers, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, are commonly referred to as the First Viennese School. They never really worked together as a group, though especially Mozart and Haydn knew each other well, and have most certainly influenced each other. For example, Mozart dedicated some string quartets to Haydn, because he valued Haydn's string quartets so much. In general they valued each other very much as composers, and as persons. For Beethoven, who was the "youngest" of the three, the other two were his big examples, especially Mozart. Beethoven was also the most romantic of the classical composers.

Composers who also play the violin and as such performed their own or other composer's compositions.
