Mighty Handful or Kutchka

Composers that were born in Russia, or gained the Russian nationality.

Romanticism was characterised by idealising the expression of the emotions of the composer. The notion of the suffering artist stems form this period. The romantic era starts around 1800, and goes on some way into the twentieth century. In the first half of the twentieth century the ever more complex romantic music competed with the new forms and sound of the then modernistic composers.

Composers who were also play the cello and as such performed their own or other composer's compositions.

Five influential Russian composers promoting Russian traditional music as opposed to the increasing Western European influences. The Russian "Kutchka" means "handful". Composer Balakirev took leadership, with Cui, Borodin, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov as other members.
