The Mannheim School was a group of composers that worked in the German city of Mannheim in the mid18th century. The local court orchestra became the most famous of its time under the main leadership of Johann Stamitz. They developed playing styles with great dynamic contrasts, like diminuendo and crescendo. These composers also strongly influenced the early development of the symphony. When Wolfgang Mozart visited Mannheim, he was also quite impressed with the orchestra.

The baroque era in music lasted roughly from 1600 till 1750, which is usually subdivided into early baroque (1600-1650), high baroque (1650-1700) and late baroque (1700-1750).
