Group of six French composers, named thus by a music critic after a concert in Paris in 1920, where their music was performed. They never actually saw themselves as a real group, because, even though they have some things in common, their musical styles developed differently. Alround artist Jean Cocteau was a sort of central person in that loosely bound group. One could call composer Erik Satie a kind of father to the group, being a generation older, but sharing their musical views. The thing these composers had in common, was that they all in some way reacted to the very romantic and serious musical style that was fashionable around the year 1900.
Composers who also play the piano and as such performed their own or other composer's compositions.
