Beethoven: Missa Solemnis

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Bristol Choral Society
City of Birmingham Choir

Adrian Partington – Conductor

Lee Bissett – Soprano
Hannah Pedley – Mezzo Soprano
Benjamin Segal – Tenor
David Soar – Bass

In a repeat of a concert in Symphony Hall, Birmingham on Saturday, 15 November, we join forces with the City of Birmingham Choir and the celebrated City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) to get our season off to a towering start with a performance of Beethoven’s magnificent Missa Solemnis.

Composed between 1819 and 1823, the Mass was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1824. A month later Beethoven attended a performance in Vienna of three movements under the title of ‘three Grand Hymns with solo and chorus voices’ — but, alas, he was so deaf by then that he could hear neither the music nor the applause.

One of Beethoven’s friends, visiting during the process of composition, describes how, “…in the living room, behind a locked door, we heard the master singing parts of the fugue in the Credo – singing, howling, stamping … the door opened and Beethoven stood before us with distorted features, calculated to excite fear.”

Howling and stamping will not be part of our performance, but you may be sure that two first-class choirs and a world-class symphony orchestra will, between them, reveal the true grandeur of this thrilling work.

This is a concert not to be missed.
