(L’interprétation et l’application de l’entité spatiale-temporelle passent par plusieurs phases évolutives, voire expérimentales et représentent l’originalité du compositeur, basée sur sa fantaisie, son imagination ainsi que sur sa capacité de synthèse de ces vertus organiques avec la nécessité d’extériorisation d’influence de réalités quotidiennes sur l’intériorité.)

L’application de l’élément spatial et de l’élément temporel de l’entité spatiale-temporelle d’expression sonore est opérée stochastiquement dans la musique de Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) et expliquée à l’aide de l’algèbre normative. Les contraintes restrictives susceptibles d’apparaître dans le cadre d’une opération sonore sont minimisées par l’introduction de la fonction logique du développement architectural. Les nuages de tons — une unité esthétiquement déterminée mais immatérialisée — et les groupes de tons (les classes de sons traitées d’une manière linéaire) — forment une nouvelle unité où l’élément temporel comporte des précisions métriques et l’élément spatial des déterminations concernant la hauteur. Les barres de mesure servent de repère métrique sans influencer la substance rythmique de l’oeuvre. Les groupes de tons indiqués apparaissent séparément ou simultanément, leurs rapports mutuels créent une stéréométrie tonale apte à reproduire toutes les subtilités d’une expression sonore.

L’oeuvre Herma, écrite pour le piano, comporte quatre classes: A, B, C et la classe R qui est référentielle, et comprend la totalité de sons de l’instrument. Ces classes servent de base à la formation des hors-temps, opération abstraite provenant de la complémentarité, de la conjonction et de la disjonction. L’oeuvre débute par la classe référentielle séparée de la classe A par un espace sonore muni de crescendo et accelerando. La classe A se manifeste d’abord d’une manière linéaire, ensuite en nuages de sons (positif). La classe B fait son apparition comme linéaire positive. Un long silence prépare psychologiquement la fusion des classes A et B et leur rappel positif conduisant a la fusion doublée AB + AB. L’union des classes B et C suit la fusion AB + AB et précède la fusion des trois classes ABC. Les opérations logiques conduisent à l’entité finale F résultant de ABC + ABC ± ABC + ABC par exemple, ou de (AB + AB)C + (AB + AB)C.

Life

His parents were Greek. Studied civil engeneering in Athens, Greece. Leader in the Greek resistance in World War II. Lost one eye. Sentenced to death, but fled. Ended up in Paris, where he became assistant to architect Le Corbusier. Involved in the Philips pavilion on the Brussels World Fair in 1958, where stereophonic electronic music by Varèse was played. Became French in 1965. His musical development was shaped by contacts with Messiaen and Varèse.
