- Cardiff University School of Music appoints Judith Weir
(24 January 2007)Judith Weir CBE has been appointed for three years at the Cardiff School of Music in Wales as Distinguished Visiting Research Professor in Composition. Professor Weir has recently held academic posts at Princeton and Harvard University.
She will now regularly work with the 100 composition students at the Music School and with the School's Schubert Ensemble, with whom she already had a longstanding professional relationship.
Professor Weir has studied composition with John Tavener in London, and with Robin Holloway at Cambridge University. Since the early 1980s she worked predominantly in opera and music theatre. She composed three full-length operas, A Night in the Chinese Opera (1987), The Vanishing Bridegroom (1990), and Blond Eckbert (1994). She also collaborated in theatrical productions with Sir Peter Hall, Caryl Churchill and Peter Shaffer.
In 1994 she received the Critics' Circle Music Section Award for the most outstanding contribution to British musical life. In 1997 Judith Weir received the Lincoln Center's Stoeger Prize.
