Pieces for 8-String Guitar

Life

Alexander Vynograd was born in 1969 in Kharkov, Ukraine. He started his musical education at the Kharkov Music School. There Alexander spent 9 years, learning in the piano class. In 1983 he grew fond of guitar and started taking private classes by the renowned teacher I.M. Balan. In 1985 he moved to Moscow, where he became a student at the Gnesins Music College. Vynograd’s competition victories include the first prize at the College Contest, first prize at the Russian Folk Instuments Competetion, and first prize at the USSR Music Festival, Guitar Contest.

At some point Alexander noticed that a 6-string guitar’s range doesn’t allow to play a lot of classical pieces. So, in 1990 he invented an 8-string guitar which was unique since the range was enhanced not only through the basses, but also through the upper string. From this point on all his solo concerts were played on this guitar. He invented a special technique for playing his guitar e.g., the chin technique. He also composed a few pieces to illustrate the new instrument’s facilities.

1990 through 1998 Alexander was the first guitar of Kharkov Philharmonics Guitar Quartet. He also had monthly solo concerts at the Central Concert Hall in Kharkov. A number of TV and radio recordings took place in Kharkov, Kiev and Moscow.

1993 through 1996 Alexander went on annual concert tours to Poland, Czech Republic and Germany. Since 1998 Alexander has been living in Munich, Germany, where he has already had a number of concerts.
