Music
Vitry’s surviving works are mostly secular motets, including contributions to Le Roman de Fauvel.
Life
Vitry wrote the important text Ars Nova, which introduced theoretical innovations in areas such as notation.
He was a composer, music theorist (he may have written the treatise “Ars Nova”), poet, diplomat, and soldier. He wrote many chansons and motets, and was prominent at the courts of Charles IV, Phillippe II, and Jean II. Phillippe de Vitry also held canonrys at Clermont, Beauvais and Paris.(Contribution by Colin Wright <colin.wright530
