Biography
Born 1907 in Kolozsvar (Hungaria now, Romania). Studies at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest with Bártok (piano) and Kodály (cocmposition).
1943-49 Professor of composition at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest where his pupils include György Ligeti and György Kurtág .
1949 emigration to the West. From 1950 teaches composition and theory at the Bern Conservatory.
1965-1972 Guest professorsships in the US (Baltimore) and Australia.
1968-1977 Appointed professor of ethnomusicology and 20th-century music at Berne University.
Dies in Berne on March 4, 1992.
