Biography

Born 1907 in Kolozsvar (Hungaria now, Romania). Studies at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest with Bártok (piano) and Kodály (cocmposition).

1943-49 Professor of composition at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest where his pupils include György Ligeti and György Kurtág.

1949 emigration to the West. From 1950 teaches composition and theory at the Bern Conservatory.

1965-1972 Guest professorsships in the US (Baltimore) and Australia.

1968-1977 Appointed professor of ethnomusicology and 20th-century music at Berne University.

Dies in Berne on March 4, 1992.
