- Erkki-Sven Tüür elected Citizen of the Year
[posted 1 December 2009]Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür was elected Citizen of the Year the year 2009. This was announced by the Estonian Culture Minister Laine Jänes last Thursday.
The minister said that this year’s citizens day motto “Creative people – successful state” is like a synonym to Tüür. “He is a person among us, who every day lives his life in Estonia and is busy here, is bound by heart to his island, state and people and still creates big world music,” said minister Jänes.
The prize received by Erkki-Sven Tüür, who was elected from 23 candidates, was a glass sculpture, and an award of 20,000 kroons.

There is one CD with five works, the main one being the Requiem, which is a strange mixture of atonal and lush romantic music. Reading from notes from cd he was born in 1959 and in 1979 was in a chamber rock band before experimenting with this peculiar style. This CD is available on ECM New Series.
