Life

Johann George Tromlitz was born on the 8th of November of 1725 in Reinsdorf and died in Leipzig on February 4 1805.

In around 1750 he started making flutes for himself. In 1754 he became principal flautist of the Grosses Konzert. The orchestra disbanded during the Seven Years War. He left in 1776 to spend more time teaching, writing, and making flutes. In 1774 Johann Friedrich Reichardt considered Johann Tromlitz one of the only four Leipzig virtuosos worth naming. He wrote three books about flute playing.

When Johann first started making flutes he made two keyed flutes (d# and e♭). He first said he was making flutes with more keys in 1781. Johann pretty much invented the Tromlitz flute. Since he made these, he also wrote a book about playing them.

Near the end of his life he was working on the chromatic flute, but gave up because he couldent get the fingerings right. He did write about this though, and it influenced Boehm to make the flute that most of us use now.
