Music

Compositions include: 3 operas: The Mother of Us All, Four Saints in Three Acts, Lord Byron. 3 symphonic pieces written for films: The River, The Plough That Broke the Plains, & Louisiana Story. Filling Station (A ballet) a symphonic piece called: Symphony on a Hymn Tune and many other musical pieces in all forms.

Life

Prolific American composer.and music critic. Contemporary of Aaron Copland. Studied in Paris in the twenties with Nadia Boulanger along with and at the same time as Aaron Copland. Part of the ex-patriate American cultural crowd of the 20s.
