Life
As a child Sterkel learned how to play the piano and the organ. After his school days he studied theology, and in 1778 he became vicar and organist in Würzburg (Stift Neumünster). His compositions were already so famous that the archbishop and Kurfürst of Mainz, Friedrich Carl Joseph von Erthal, took him in his service in 1785. There he gave lessons to singers and musicians. In 1793 Erthal died. His successor, Carl Theodor von Dalberg, reorganised the musicbusiness at the court, and finally in 1810 appointed Sterkel in cahrge of the court music in Aschaffenburg. Three years before his death, Sterkel returned to Würzburg.
