Life
The Dutch composer and conductor Alphonse Stallaert studied composition at the Utrecht Conservatory with Hendrik Andriessen and direction with Bertus van Lier. After his final exams he studied with John Barbirolli, conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester. In 1946 he went to Paris. There he studied counterpoint for another year at the conservatory. He continued his studies in orchestre direction with André Cluytens and composition with Arthur Honegger.
Stallaert is buried close to the famous painter Vincent van Gogh, who he admired very much, on the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise.
