Life

Edward Southall is a young composer who has been taught by such composers as Paul Patterson and Diana Burrell. He is currently in his last year of school at Victoria College, Jersey.

Although performance is very important to Edward, his forte lies is composition. For four years Edward has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain Composers’ Course where he has taken the most from invaluble experiences; performances of his works include The Deer, performed by Tommy Hewitt Jones on cello and the composer on piano at Silk Hall, Radley College; The Half-Life of Einsteinium, performed by NYO Sinfonietta, and Monsieur Moustique, which has been considered by many to be Edward’s best work yet; in 2003 he was a runner-up in the BBC Proms / Guardian Young Composer Competition after submitting this work and it has also been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In early 2004 the composer was invited to write a work for The Endymion Ensemble. Athens is Burning! was quickly composed and performed for the first time in The Purcell Room, South Bank in February 2004. This piece was subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 2’s "The Green Room".

Edward currently has an offer to study Composition at the Royal College of Music in September & to read Music at Queens’ College, Cambridge the following year.

Edward hopes to eventually become a composer for Film.
