• "Arrorró" for violin and clarinet (Köln, 15/May/1995) [2’20"]. To Anahí and Nicolás Montes. First performed by Aki Komiyama-Yasuda and Diego Montes on October 27th, 1995 at the Künstlerhof Schreyahn in Lüchow.
• "Passacaglia über HEIDELBERG" for clarinet, violin and violoncello (Cologne, 30/JAN - 11/FEB/1996) [7’00"]. To the city of Heidelberg for her 800 years. First performed on 4/APR/1997 by Martin Vogel (cl), Mayumi Hasegawa (vln) y Monika Schwamberger (vcl) at the Heiliggeistkirche (church of the Holy Ghost) in Heidelberg, as first piece of the opening concert of the 11th Festival "Gegenwelten" for New Music, organized by the Kulturinstitut Komponistinnen. A fragment of this recording was aired on 15/4/1997, in the programme "World of classical music" of the Latinamerican desk of the radio Deutsche Welle. Performed again by the Ensemble Octandre in Bologna on 29 March 2000 and on 8th November 2000. Performed at the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid on 12/JUL/2001 by members of the JONDE (Joven Orquesta Nacional de España); the concert was repeated in Segovia on 1/AGO/2001.

Repeated by Michele Marelli on 25/JAN/2002 in Alessandria (Italy) for the Jazz Association "L’ AX". In May 2002 the piece won an award at the Tribuna Argentina de Música Electroacústica (TRIME), organized by the Foundation Encuentros Internacionales de Música Contemporánea (EIMC-SIMC), with the support of the Consejo Argentino de la Música (CAMU-CIM-Unesco).
• "Panther" speech composition as electronic sounds, after a text by Rainer Maria Rilke ("Der Panther"). Commisioned by the "Work-Group in Theater-Dance" (Tanztheater ArbeitsGemeinschaft) from the secondary school "Herder Gymnasium", in Cologne (group conducted by Ligia Liberatori). The piece would be used for a choreography of the ensemble "Katastrophe Ballet". This composition was designed in Darmstadt and made in Cologne, in the studio of the composer, based on sound-samples of Ligia Liberatori (voice), Holger Müller-Hartmann (fagot), Gustavo Fontes (doublebass), Damian Zangger (tuba); and the voices of the pupils, in April and May 2001. Juan María Solare was born in Buenos Aires on August 11th, 1966.

Education

Studies and diploma in Piano, Composition and Conducting at the Conservatorio Nacional (Argentina). Between 1993 and 1996 he undertook postgraduate studies on Composition at the Musikhochschule in Cologne (Germany) under the guidance of Johannes Fritsch, Clarence Barlow and Mauricio Kagel, under the auspices of a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Between October 1997 and February 1999, postgraduate studies with Helmut Lachenmann in Stuttgart. Between 1999 and 2001 studied electronic music with Hans Ulrich Humpert in Cologne (with Diploma). In April 2005 he obtained the title "Licenciado en Composición" (Master degree) from the Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte in Buenos Aires. Since 1993 he regularly meets and takes part in seminars given by Karlheinz Stockhausen. Currently he is doing a PhD in music education at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Konzertexamen (master) in electroacoustic composition at the Musikhochschule in Cologne.

Teaching positions

From 1986 until 1993 he taught Harmony, Morphology and Chamber Music at the Conservatory of Tandil (Argentina). Since January 2002 he gives piano tuition at the Musikschule Bremen (Germany). Since October 2002 conducts the Orquesta no típica, a chamber music group devoted to tango music at the University of Bremen. Since October 2004 he teaches piano at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen.

He gives courses and lectures on contemporary music (Institut für neue Musik und Musikerziehung, Darmstadt; Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, the Ateneo in Madrid). Besides, private tuition (piano) and public seminars on tango music and contemporary music.

Beside his compositional activities he also writes for diverse publications (mainly in Spain but also for Tempo in UK) and for the radio (Deutsche Welle, Südwestfunk).

Awards

His compositions obtained prizes and awards in Argentina ("Promociones Musicales", "National Endowment for the Arts", Federación Argentina de Música Electroacústica), United Kingdom (British & International Bass Forum), Austria (Yage und Aspekte Salzburg), Germany (Walter Witte Viola-Stiftung, Bremer Komponistenwettbewerb) and Spain (Radio Clásica-CDMC). In 1993 and 1994 he had a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Between July 1998 and June 1999 he held a scholarship of the Heinrich-Strobel Foundation (Baden-Baden). Since June 2001 until May 2002 he was composer in residence at the House of Artists in Worpswede (Germany). In October 2004 he won the "Bremer Komponistenwettbewerb".

Jury member

In January 2002, jury (piano) in Jugend Musiziert (Germany). March 2004: Jury (piano) in the competition for young pianists piccole mani (Perugia, Italy), whereby there was a work by him as an obligatory piece in each category. In September 2004 he was on the jury (composition) in the competition "Xicöatl" (Salzburg). Jan-Jul 2007: jury at the clarinet competition "Primera Maratón Musical" organized by Clariperú, with his work Convalecencia as obligatory piece.

Oeuvre

More than 250 works composed, over half of them already premiered. His pieces are broadcasted regularly (Radio Nacional de España, Deutsche Welle, Radio Bremen, Radio Fabrik Salzburg, Radio Universitaria Sao Paulo, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Bayerischer Rundfunk). In 2002 he received a commission from the CDMC (Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea, Madrid), in 2003 from the Kunststiftung NRW (Düsseldorf); in 2004 again from CDMC (Spain) and from the Bremen Music Council. On 30th June 2004 his Concertango was premiered by the Orchestra of the Universität Bremen (cond.: Susanne Gläß). Five CDs from different performers include his pieces.

He also composed music for short films and Internet animations (see www.la-nuria.com).

As a pianist, his repertoire has four main centres: classical music of the turn of the century (Liszt, Scriabin), music of our time (Cage, Schoenberg), Argentine composers (inclusive tango) and his own works - both as soloist as in diverse chamber music groups.
