Music

Malachias Siebenhaar was a composer of lute music, and also composed many motets.

Life

Between 1637 and 1641 Siebenhaar studied at the Wittenberg University, where he became befriended with Philipp von Zesen, together with whom he later often cooperated artistically. After his studies Siebenhaar shortly worked as Kantor in Tangermünde.

Between 1644 und 1651 Siebenhaar had the position of Musical Director and Kantor at the Stadtschule in Magdeburg. After that he took over the Pfarrei Nischwitz (Thallwitz). In 1655 he became second preacher at the Ulrichskirche in Magdeburg.

Siebenhaar composed numerous Motets. Zesen used many of his compositions in his lied collections. Because of his cooperation with Zesen Siebenhaar came into contact with many other writers and artists. He was also a member of the “Sprachgesellschaft Die Deutschgesinnte Genossenschaft”, which was founded by them.
