- Schickele “discovers” new PDQ Bach music
(29 January 2008)It took professor Schickele over ten years, but finally there is now a new album with new music from PDQ Bach. This CD is called “The Jekyll and Hyde Show.” It includes recent P.D.Q. “discoveries,” e.g. the "Four Next-to-Last Songs" and a string quartet with subtitle “The Moose.”

Possibly the funniest thing Schickele's emitted. But then whatever of his I'm enjoying seems to get that label. If you love opera but aren't too solemn about it, you should enjoy this classic

- Welche Wonne!
I've seen so many posts wherein people name their fave operas to introduce to the fearful, and rarely do they mention this one. Why? Just because it's a parody doesn't mean it isn't real music!
From the pompous, apologetic introduction by the Professor to the last aria (performed by the mute servant)this is laugh out loud funny. And it's in English, so I got the jokes!!!
Just like Academy Awards tend to stiff the comedies, the urge is to enjoy this without realizing how ... Read More

- Pure, unadulterated genius
Having been exposed to PDQ Bach from a friend of mine (a move he regrets to this day), I stumbled onto a videocasette version of the opera. I was instantly hooked. I watched it obsessively, getting a new joke or quip with nearly every watching. If you enjoy comedic opera, then this is pure gold. The leads are a pleasure to listen to, and the ending, well, is pure PDQ.
And on a side note: After two years of badgering, I convined my choir director to do this for our school's dinner ... Read More

Rating:
- A dissenting view
The previous reviews are uniform in praising this piece as a spoof. Yes, it is a spoof and a very good one. No more of that. I am going to take another tack. I say it is an opera and a pretty good one, too, whatever its roots and original intentions. It works, and works well as a music drama--or rather comedy in this case.
Peter Schickele, channeling the last and least of the Bachs, has concocted an effective singspiel/opera buffa, probably the only one in the Twentieth Century ... Read More
