Music

Lazare Saminsky was a champion of Jewish music and many of his compositions use elements from traditional Jewish music. He composed 5 symphonies, a ballet-opera, a number of vocal songs and church music.

Life

Saminsky studied mathematics before switching to music. He studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Anatolii Lyadov. He immigrated to the US in 1919-20 and was the musical director of Temple Emanu-El in New York City. He was a founder of the League of Composers and wrote several books about music and theater.
