Life

His father was the British pianist Franz Rummel, his mother was a daughter of Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph. He studied in Berlin (piano with Godowsky, composition with Kaun)and Washington (piano with Fabian). He held American citizenship, although his career was entirely in Europe. He was a friend and active champion of Debussy, premiering 10 of his piano works. His songs were once very popular, sung by Maggie Teyte, John McCormack, and more recently, Jessye Norman. Lost works include a violin sonata, string quartet, and piano concerto. His biography is found in Slonimsky, MGG, Grove 3-5, and The New Grove II. Seven of his songs are recorded on Dante HPC027.

A full-length biography of Rummel is now published? The title is: "Prince of Virtuosos: A Life of Walter Rummel, American Pianist" (Scarecrow Press, 2005). Author: Charles Timbrell.
