Georg Rhaw is mainly remembered for his arrangements of other composers’ works.
Recording
“David Munrow — Music for Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain | Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance”, recorded by The Early Music Consort of London for the Testament label (no. SBT 1251) and directed by David Munrow, contains three arrangements by Rhaw: of “Le cuer de vous” by Antonio Gardano, of “29. Mon petit cueur” by Guillaume Le Heurteur and of “Amour organ” by the Franco-Flemish polyphonist Pierre De Manchicourt.
Biography
This German printer and composer became cantor at the prestigious Thomasschule in Leipzig (as later J.S. Bach) in 1518, but as one of Luther’s first followers he abandoned this post in 1520, and in 1523 became a schoolmaster in Wittenberg. He started a printing business there in 1525, and published many important collections of early Lutheran music including works by all the leading composers of the day who had Protestant sympathies. These publications contained simple congregational psalm settings and sacred songs, and also the more elaborate Masses and motets still used in Lutheran worship.
