Life

Born in December 1983, at five Jaime Reis started studying music in Seia, where he was taught under the supervision of several teachers, particularly by the ethnomusicologist António Tilly. His former compositions, for MIDI sequencer, electronics and small instrumental bands started when he was 12 up to 16 years old, when he began studying at Conservatório de Música in Viseu. Between 17 and 22, he concluded a music teaching degree in the University of Aveiro, where he studied composition and electronic music with Isabel Soveral and João Pedro Oliveira. He is presently pursuing doctoral studies in Social Sciences, in Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Since 2003, he attends regularly the seminars of Gulbenkian Foundation with Emmanuel Nunes and the Stockhausen summer courses (Kürten).

He was given a mention on the 1st and 2nd Contest Jorge Peixinho, he was selected for the 2nd, 3th and 4th Workshop Gulbenkian for Portuguese Composers, his music was selected to be presented at the ICMC 2005 (Barcelona), he received two prize scholarships by the University of Aveiro and one from Fundação Engenheiro António de Almeida.

Besides his activity as a composer, he has developed other activities such as artistic direction of the Festival Dni Muzyki Portugalskiej w Krakowie (Days of Portuguese Music in Krakow) and Dias de Música Electroacústica (Days Electroacoustic Music, in Portugal); conferences — University of Aveiro, Music Academy in Krakow, Superior School of Tourism and telecommunication in Seia and at the 42. Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Forum Musical thinking today); sonorization of documentaries and multimedia presentations (as free lancer for design companies); cooperated as research fellow for the Music Information Centre of Portuguese Music and for INET (Ethnomusicology Institute — Universidade Nova de Lisboa), where he develops studies about portuguese music and he teaches and is co-director of Conservatório de Música in Seia.

Reis’s music has been presented, among others, in Portugal (Festival Música Viva and Festival de Música de Aveiro), in Poland, Turkey (Ankara), France (Synthèse 2005, Bourges), Austria (Hörfest 05, Graz), where he was invited composer to premiere is piece Lysozyme Synthesis and Belgium (Ghent), where he premiere his piece Density Study, commissioned by Logos Foundation. Currently, he is composer in residence at LEC — Laboratory of Electroacoustic Creation — from Miso Music Portugal.
