(Contribution by Mr. Sardonicus.)

Life

At the age of 14 Reincken (also spelled “Reinken”) settled in the Dutch town Deventer. In 1654 he went to Hamburg in Germany to study with Heinrich Scheidemann, who was a pupil of Sweelinck.

Reincken returned to Deventer in 1657, where he became organist in the “Bergkerk”. A year later he again moves to Hamburg to become Scheidemann’s assistant. Reincken then succeeds him in 1663, and stays in function till his death (5 month before he is to become 100 years old!)
