Biography

Louis Ferdinand Prince of Prussia was born on November 18, 1772 in Friedrichsfelde near Berlin. He was the fifth child of Prince August Ferdinand, the youngest brother of Friedrich the Great, who especially love his nephew for his wit and liveliness. He studied with Jan Ladislav Dusík. Louis Ferdinand was an excellent pianist and composer pioneered the way from the Classical to the Romantic style indeed more distinctly than his contemporaries. Beethoven dedicated him his Third Piano Concerto in recognition of the later´s talents as pianist and composer. Louis Ferdinand had more ample oportunity to devote his attention to musical life when his family moved to the Bellevue Castle in Merlin. He very likely was present at Court when Mozart came to visit in 1789. This year, Louis Ferdinand joined the military service, taking part in the hostilities against Austria (1789-1790) and the preparation for the Russian war in 1791. Too, he participated in the campaign against France in 1792. In 1806, the Prussian began to mobilize against France and Napoleon encountered the Prussians at Saalfeld. On october 13, Prince Louis Ferdinand died at the age of only 34 on the battlefield in combat against Napoleon. He was killed in the advance guard by a French soldier.
