Winner of the Philharmonia Orchestra Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Composition Prize 2003. SPNM shortlisted composer (Typhus 99, Nuts & Bolts 02). Music Teacher, Composer of chamber music, Christian music, opera and theatre music.
John started composing at the age of 9, and at 15 won a local song-writing competition. After a gap year in Pakistan which kindled a great interest in the sitar, a BA from Bristol (95–98) and a Masters from Manchester (98–99) he started teaching music, married Vicky, and is currently MD of Bristol Savoy Operatic Society. He has written music for four plays, and two operatic works — Crossed Wires for workshop performance at the Huddersfield Festival and 3 Sliced Mice — commissioned by Five Brothers Pasta Sauces and performed under his own baton in Bristol. He has written for COMA’s London Ensemble, Bristol University Symphony Orchestra, and has had two chamber pieces shortlisted by the SPNM. He also writes music for Christian worship, and his piano duet Changes was recently broadcast in Austria.
