Parables of Vincent Persichetti

V.P. was a friend of mine. I know that he worked incessantly at his music and teaching. His parables have no religious significance. They are mostly short pieces that he wrote while taking a "breather" from his work on larger pieces, or from unused sketches. He also wrote many "Serenades" in several movements for various instrumental compositions. They are collections of short pieces.

Parables series

Persichetti worked on various Parables for 20 years. I'm looking for more information on these. Did each work correspond to a particular parable in a gospel book? What's a good resource for this information?

Music

Primarily music for winds and percussion: Symphony for Band (no. 6), Psalm, Divertimento. 12 symphonies, 4 string quartets, Piano sonatas, etc.

Life

Was born, worked, died in Philidelphia. He was a composer, pianist, editor, teacher, and critic.

Joseph Anikewich <joea(at)total-web.com> adds: He was one of the best modern composers of the 20th Century. Also that he taught at Julliard School of music for over 40 years. In that time he had such students such as Thelonius Monk, Philip Glass and numerous others... Actually too many to mention.
