Life

Eduardo Luís Patriarca started his musical studies at the age of four in the Boa Senhora da Esperança School, and continued his studies at the Silva Monteiro Music Course, where he finished the Piano Secondary Course. He attended seminars with Wilfred Jenschtz, Gerhard Staebler, António de Sousa Dias, Emmanuel Nunes and Jorge Peixinho, with whom he also studied individually. He attended an improvement course in Composition with Leo Brouwer and a master class with Phillipe Hurel.

In November 2002 he organized a conference-concert on electronic music at the Oporto Faculty of Letters within the 1st Art History Week. That same year, Patriarca taught the 1st Electronic Music Seminar at the Fornos Improvement Courses. His essay “Palavra e Som = Música” was commissioned by the poet valter hugo mãe and published in the magazine Apeadeiro.

He teaches Analysis and Composition Techniques, Music History, Acoustics and Music Theory since 1991 at the S. Pio X Music Academy in Vila do Conde. He was also a teacher at the Mirandela Higher Art School (Esproarte), the Braga Conservatory, the Carvalhos Music School, the Santa Cecília Music Academy in Espinho and the Póvoa do Varzim Music School.

His works, which are often commissioned by several institutions, have been regularly played in Portugal, Germany, Scotland, Spain and Canada. Patriarca has written pieces for a solo instrument, orchestra pieces, music for the theatre and sound installations with image. He also wrote the children’s opera As Quatro Portas do Céu, on a libretto by valter hugo mãe based on a book by Rosa Lobato de Faria.

He started the group “Ensemble” (with the same formation as Pierrot Lunaire), entirely dedicated to contemporary music. He is also a founder and partner of the Quantitas Editions.
