Music

Life

Grew up in Hammerfest in Finnmark, Norway. Started very early to play the piano and the violin. First small composition as a five year old. Stood in for his father as an organist in Hammerfest church at the age of six. Studied organ and composition in Trondheim and at the music conservatory in Leipzig from 1870. His music is inspired from Richard Wagner’s music, but has also got some inspiration from the traditional "joik" of the sami-people. Lived in Oslo from 1874. Composed Norway’s first real opera "Stig Hvide". From 1899-1920 music inspector in the Royal Norwegian Army.
