The Korean composer Hyo-shin Na, one of the most prolific and prominent Asian women-composers, is laureate of the “Voya Toncitch Prize” International Piano Composition Contest in Paris, in 1887. According to Mr. Toncitch “Hyo-shin Na’s work modestly entitled Music for Pianist reveals an extraordinary talent and a great technical dexterity. The work is inspired by a Korean folk-tune. The charming simplicity of the three-note popular melody: G-flat, D-flat, A-flat – is masterly varied, dynamically amplified, emotionally intensified, expertly guided to the stormy, demanding “finale” expressed with diabolic tremolants of the three-element theme and hypnotic repeated notes, whose terrific fortissimo is gruffly silenced by the irresistible charm of the folk-tune.” “Music for Pianist” by Hyo-shin Na was premiered by Voya Toncitch in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 25th, 1988. Mr. Toncitch’s recital was broadcast live and recorded by KWGS. Mr. Toncitch has recorded Ms. Hyo-shin Na’s work in Europe and played on recitals in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh).
