Music

Works include an opera "Boabdil der letzte Mauernkonig" many short piano works - etudes, etudes for the left hand alone, a set of Spanish Dances (later orchestrated by Phillipp Scharwenka) and Two Piano Concertos (the manuscript for the first concerto has disappeared), a Ballet, and a Concerto for Violin, but to name but a few.

Life

Moszkowski was of Jewish and Polish background. Initially studied at the Stern Academy in Berlin. First produced a piano quintet at the age of thirteen. He made his concert debut as a pianist in Berlin at the age of 19. He was also an accomplished violinist. Moszkowski also studied and ultimately became a teacher at Theodore Kullak’s "Neue Akademie der Tonkunst". He retained this position for about twenty five years. Several visits were made to London as a conductor, where he introduced some of his orchestral works. Married the sister of Cécile Chaminade and moved to Paris. Moszkowski retired from his concert career in 1897 and concentrated on teaching. Some of his pupils included Thomas Beecham and Wanda Landowska.

He had large Russian and German investments which lost him his fortune at the time of the war. Alone and ill and with no money (his wife and family had died), his friends in New York held a benefit concert for him (there were fourteen pianists on stage). This collected enough money to help him through his remaining years.

Milton <miltonberlinmsn.com> writes: According to the New York Times (several reports in 1925(?)) the funds from the benfits never reached him.

<potvinbeaulieuglobetrotter.net> writes: I have an original picture of Moszkowski playing piano with an other person (Tchaikovsky). The date inscribe on reverse of the picture is 17 mars 1918. If somedy is interested to have more information, you may contact me at <potvinbeaulieuglobetrotter.net>.
