Dr. Rafael Mevorach considers himself a post-tonalist; however, many works sound tonal because of the specific harmonic structures utilized.
Life
The early musical education of Dr. Rafael Mevorach consisted of private lessons on clarinet and oboe. He began performing chamber music during early teens and continued as oboe soloist as early as age 15. He attended the Juilliard School for the first two years of college, but then studied with John Holmes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s.
Mevorach traveled to Israel and performed with the Haifa Symphony and Hebrew University Orchestra. Later he returned to Israel in 1980 and worked as an instrumental teacher and composer.
He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (1975), Hampshire College, Amherst, MA; Master of Music, with an Award of Academic Merit (1997), University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL; and Doctor of Musical Arts (2005), University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE.
Presently Rafael Mevorach resides in Pasadena, CA and publishes own compositions under the imprint, Music of Rafael Mevorach Co.: www.musicofrafaelmevorach.com.
