Duarte Lôbo was the most important Portuguese composer of his day, having spent more than forty years as choirmaster and musical director at the Cathedral in Lisbon. His Missa pro defunctis (Requiem mass) is influenced by that of the Spanish composer Tomas-Luis de Victoria, with the plainchant on which the work is based appearing in long, sustained notes in the soprano. Life
A Latinized version of his name is also used: Eduardus Lupus.
