George Lloyd

Viewed from the US the British Classical Music scene is presented as a rather closed club, especially including critics, conductors, record companies, acadamies no doubt, and the mags like Grammophone. All of the above knew of Lloyd and some even heard his music, but he was ignored. I wonder why, given those who have been extolled writing dull tuneless noise hodge-podges. Surely a fair comparison to RVW or Bax or Arnold would be enough to know more about Lloyd and hear is music played. Odd, that he had to come to the US to conduct and record his symphonies, but to our delight. I am astonished at the conductors who overlooked him in favor of others.

Music

Life

After early successes with opera and three symphonies, he was badly shell-shocked in the Second World War, and retired to Cornwall to a market garden, growing carnations and mushrooms. He composed intermittently, but eventually his health improved, and he started to compose a number of new works, most of which he has conducted himself and recorded on the Albany Records label.

(This is an English composer whose work is wrongly ignored by many music critics. His symphonies are melodic, but nonetheless powerful. His choral writing is inspired, and I recommend his Symphonic Mass, as well as all his symphonies. Those who know his music, adore it.)
