Studied music at the Lemmens Institute in Malines and one the Lemmens-Tinel prize (for organ, counterpoint and fuge) in 1958. From 1953-1957 studied musicology and philosophy at the Louvain University. Participated in the ‘Cologne courses new music’ at Darmstadt. Won the Prix Italia with oratorio "La vita non é sogno" In 1986, "Das Shloß" (the castle), an opera based on Kafka’s novel, was premiered at the Monnaie Theater in Brussels. Since 1971, he has been president of the Belgian ISCM-section. A recording of "Das Schloß" is available under the "Koch Discover International" label, the catalogue number is DICD 920375-6. In 2003 he got the Visser-Neerlandia Prize for his complete oeuvre.
