Music

Writes contemporary music with impulses from jazz, for all types of instrumental and vocal ensembles. Compositions are performed all through Europe and the USA. The television opera, "A Game of Chess", won the Fernsehopern Preis der Stadt Salzburg in 1983, and several other works have since won recognition. Following works were voted "Work of the Year" by NOPA (one of the two Composers’ Unions): "Jubilate" (1984), "Adam" (1987) and "Saxophone Concerto (1992). Among other prizes may be mentioned the Culture Prize of Bærum Kommune (1985) and the Culture Prize of the City of Oslo (1990). Festival Composer at the Festspillene i Nord-Norge, Harstad, 1994.

Composer and Professor of composition at The Norwegian State Academy of Music.

Born August 14, 1946, London, England. Grew up in England, USA and Norway. Studied at UCLA, Calif., USA and The Norwegian State Academy of Music, receiving his Diploma in Composition in 1977.

Worked professionally as musician, arranger, composer, producer since 1972 within most areas of music.

Besides a permanent engagement at the Academy since 1976, activities include lecturing extensively throughout Norway on the subject of Composition and Drama. Author of three books on music theory, the latest being "Den Tenkende Kunstner - komposisjon og dramaturgi som prosess og metode" (Universitetsforlaget 1995 - ISBN 82-00-22405-8), which is currently (1999) being translated into English under the title, "The Artist Thinking - the Method and Process of Composition and Drama". The book deals with interdisciplinary concepts, terminology and thought processes, directed at the student/teacher within all areas of Fine Arts studies at college/university levels.
