Known mainly for his for “Donauwellen” (Waves of the Danube). Hij wrote numerous works for wind orchestra.
Iosef Ivanovici’s most famous composition, “Over the Waves of the Danube” was written and sung by Al Jolson in the biographical film “The Jolson Story”. It begins: “Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed, We vowed our true love, though a word wasn’t said.” Chorus: “Dear, as I held you close in my arms, angels were singing a hymn to your charms, two hearts gently beating and murmuring low, darling I love you so.” [Augusto Ferrera, Long Beach, CA]
Life
Iosif Ivanovici studier with Alois Riedl in Galati and with Emil Lehr in Iasi. He started as musician, and from 1879 till 1894 he was military band leader in Tulcea, Focşani in the district Vrancea and in the capitol Bucharest. From 1880 he also was conductor of an orchestra in Galati. From 1895 till his death he was inspector general of the all Romanian military bands.
