Life

Well known as a co-founder of the Schola Cantorum, d’Indy was also a renowned teacher and composer. Several of his more prominent pupils include: Erik Satie, Roland Manuel, and Bohuslav Martinu. He considered teaching more of a mission than a livelihood and he freely funded the Schola Cantorum from his own resources. He put into practice his belief that music education should develop the complete musician — the knowledge of music theory and music history, as well as the practical skills of music performance, all this in direct contrast to the practice of the Conservatoire, known as a school that turned out professional performers with little knowledge of the historical or theoretical elements of music. At his initial address of the Schola Cantorum, d’Indy declared that "Art is not a craft and that no school of Art should be only an institution for turning out craftsmen."

One of the most beautiful pieces written for saxophone in this century, the Choral Varié was commissioned by and is dedicated to American saxophonist and pioneer of saxophone repertory Elise Boyer Hall (1851-1924). The work was premiered on January 5, 1904 in Boston and was later performed on May 5, 1904 in Paris at a concert of the Société Nationale attended by leading musicians of the turn of the century French school. Choral Varié was a piece that helped make composers aware of the expressive and noble qualities inherent to the saxophone. One of the many revues of the Paris concert praised the music, if not the performance: "The somewhat austere and intellectual beauty of this flawless polyphony appear worthy of the renown and probity of the composer.
