Music

Life

Bryan Holmes was born in Chile in 1981. When he was 9 years old, began to study baroque flute and drums when he was 12. Soon, he dedicated to the guitar and founded several rock bands, for whose formations composed constantly. He studied Philosophy at the Universidad de Valparaiso (UV) and later continued his studies in the Music Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (PUCV), earning a Graduate in Musical Sciences and Arts. He studied composition and orchestration with Eduardo Caceres, and also had teachers like Rafael Diaz, Jorge Martinez and Pedro Alvarez, among others. He attended diverse courses and seminars with Gonzalo Palma, Ney Rosauro (Brazil-USA), members of the ARCEMA (Paris), Cristian Antoncic, Mario Mora, Gabriel Brncic (Chile-Spain) and Carlos Miro.

During this period, he composed various chamber, soloist and choral works, soon incorporating the electroacoustic and orchestral music to his language. In parallel, he played in rock, ethno-folkloric, electronic and experimental bands, envolving in the execution of diverse instruments. In 2004 he won unanimously the First "Darwin Vargas" Composition Contest with his piece Zona Ambula for guitar. He was founding member of the Contemporary Music Association of Valparaiso (AMCOV) and is an active member of the Latin American Sonic Arts Network (RedASLA). He taught music theory, perception, guitar and piano. He has conducted contemporary music ensembles at important theatres and concert halls in Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar and Rio de Janeiro. He has dedicated to the musical production, getting support from the Chilean Culture and Arts Council, the Valparaiso’s Government and the PUCV among others, to produce concerts, recordings, art performances, sound installations and festivals.

His music has been performed in several countries of Latin America and also broadcasted in Europe. He has worked with films directors (such as Sebastian Fuenzalida from Chile and Marthe Le More from France/Italy), as well as dance (Doriana Mendes - Brazil), theatre (Amira Reyna - Argentina), television and radio. His scores are published in Barcelona by PERIFERIA Sheet Music and his pieces has been included in some compact discs, one of them with world-wide distribution. In 2006 he moves to Brazil, and sings as tenor of Rio de Janeiro’s Symphonic Choir, under the batons of Isaac Karabtchevsky and Jerzy Semkov. The same year he is invited as composer in the Instituto Villa-Lobos’ Electroacoustic Music Studio of the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). He currently courses a Master in Composition at the above-mentioned University.
