Reactions Hoddinott news Welsh composer Alan Hoddinott dies (13 March 2008) On Wednesday composer Alun Hoddinott died at Swansea's Morriston Hospital. The composer had a long relationship with the BCC National Orchestra of Wales. The new home of the orchestra in Cardiff Bay will be named after Hoddinott, says BBC Wales controller, Menna Richards.
The Walford Davies prize for composition was awarded to Hoddinott when he was 24. In 1951 he was appointed lecturer in music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. He later became lecturer at Cardiff University and was made professor and head of department there in 1967.
In his life he received many awards, such as the John Edwards Memorial Award, the Arnold Bax Medal for composers, the Hopkins Medal of the New York St David's Society and the CBE.
